Maya Lawrence Places 27th at Rio de Janeiro World Cup, Team USA Finishes 12th

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Maya Lawrence (Teaneck, N.J.) was the top U.S. finisher in the Rio de Janeiro Epee World Cup on Saturday where she placed 27th in the Olympic qualifying event.

Lawrence defeated her NYAC teammate Lindsay Campbell (Brooklyn, N.Y.), 15-10, in her opening bout, but lost to 2004 Olympic silver medalist Laura Flessel-Colovic (FRA), 10-6, in the table of 32. Lawrence went on to place 27th overall.

On Sunday, Lawrence, Campbell, Kelley Hurley (San Antonio, Texas) and Courtney Hurley (San Antonio, Texas) represented the United States in the team event where the squad placed 12th.

Team USA lost its opening round to Poland, 45-26, and dropped down to the 9th – 12th place bracket. In the next bout, the Americans struggled against Estonia and lost, 45-27.

Competing for 11th place points, Team USA held the bout against Ukraine close, but lost the bout, 45-40.
