U.S. Takes Silver and Bronze on Vets’ First Day at Worlds
On the first day of the World Veterans Fencing Championships, US Vets crowded the podium in the 50-59 Women’s Foil event as Anne-Marie Walters earned the silver and Michelle Verhave a bronze. Jennette Starks-Faulkner turned in a great performance as well, placing eighth.
Starks-Faulkner was defeated in the quarterfinals by Britta Hilgers of Germany 4-3. Walters earned revenge in the semis by defeating Hilgers 8-7. She then fell to Liudmilla Chernova of Russia in the gold medal match, defeated 10-1. Verhave lost her semifinal match to the powerful Chernova, also, by the score of 6-5.
In the 60-69 Women’s Epee, Patricia Bedrosian reached the quarterfinals before falling to Liubov Mayorova of Russia 7-4. Bonnie Aher and Cynthia Runyon unfortunately went into the elimination rounds seeded 17th and 16th, respectively, and therefore had to fence each other in the round of 32. Runyon won that bout and was then defeated by the competition’s eventual winner, Marie Chantal DeMaille of France.
The US Men in the 70+ Men’s Saber event had a tougher day. William Hall earned 13th spot, the highest placement by the US men in the competition.
