New York's Nzingha Prescod Leads U.S. Women's Foil Team at Junior World Cup in Germany

Nzingha Prescod (New York, N.Y.) claimed the silver medal in women's foil at the Junior World Cup in Waldkirch, Germany. She advanced through the tournament before losing to Russia's Inna Deriglazova, 15-10, in the gold-medal final. She was the best finish for the United States.

Lee Kiefer (Lexington, Ky.) advanced to the quarterfinal round where she was narrowly defeated by Italy's Stefania Straniero, 15-14, who was then defeated in the semi-finals by Prescod 15-10. Kiefer finished seventh overall.

In preliminary competition, Prescod was perfect with victories over Poland's Martyna Jelinska, 15-8; Italy's Violetta Piergiacomi, 15-1; teammate Ambika Singh, 15-3.

Kiefer, also solid in the preliminaries, was victorious over Poland's Ewa Siedlik, 15-2; Germany's Svenja Stauch, 15-9; and France's Clarisse Luminet, 15-3.

Also competing in the Germany World Cup were Sarah Parmacek, Hyun-Kyung Yuh, Eve Levin, Madison Zeiss, Mona Shaito, Kylei McGill, Margaret Lu, Ambika Singh and April Whitney. The U.S. delegation was coached by Michael Pederson, U.S. Fencing's National Women's Foil Coach.

Prescod and Kiefer are positioned to qualify for the 2010 Junior World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. Both athletes will know their world championship status within several weeks.
