Two-time Olympic Champion Mariel Zagunis Awarded Prestigious Challenge Chevalier Feyerick Trophy

The International Federation Escrime (FIE) honored Mariel Zagunis (Portland, Ore.) with the Challenge Chevalier Feyerick Trophy that is awarded every two years to either an individual fencer, team or member federation who has shown the most chivalrous, unselfish attitude and spirit of sportsmanship. This is one of the highest recognitions from the international federation.

This honor was bestowed upon the two-time Olympic champion and 2009 World Champion at the International Federation Escrime Congress meeting in Palermo, Sicily. The 24-year-old sabre fencer is the first American to receive this recognition, which was first awarded in 1940. Her name will be engraved upon the trophy that is displayed at FIE headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The title of World Champion was the one title missing from Zagunis' career until this past September. She won the Olympic Gold in Athens which was the first USA gold in fencing in 100 years, and went on to win gold again in 2008 in Beijing. She holds titles as U-17 World Champion, two-time U-20 World Champion, numerous Junior Team World Champion titles and is a two-time Senior Team World Champion. Zagunis' best World Championship finish prior to 2009 was silver at the 2005 World Championships in Torino.

"Obviously, I was very honored to be considered for the award and it is really special to have won it," said Zagunis. "I've been fencing for 14 years. I have many fencing heroes and now to be recognized on the same level as my heroes with such a special award is something I'm proud of."

The trophy is named after Chevelier Feyerick, who acted as the FIE Secretary General from 1933-1940, who fell in the field of honor while charging at the head of the battalion he commanded against the invaders of his country during World War II.
