(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – The U.S. Men’s Saber Team won its second title of the season on Saturday with a gold medal win at the Goppingen Cadet European Cup in Germany.

Two members of the team that won gold in Godollo in October – Connor Ritchey (Wheat Ridge, Colo.) and Gavin Turner (Rehoboth, Mass.) – joined with teammates Matthew Chen (Monmouth Junction, N.J.) and David Timofeyev (Antelope, Calif.) to defeat Japan, 45-37, in the table of 32 and FC TBB, 45-31, in the 16.

After a decisive, 45-32, victory over Poland in the quarters, Team USA defeated St. Petersburg, 45-38, in the semis.

The Americans won their final match, 45-36, over Russia II to secure the gold.

In the women’s individual event, 16-year-old Regina O’Brien (Wellesley Hills, Mass.) earned her first international top-eight finish.

Now ranked sixth in the U.S. cadet women’s saber team standings, O’Brien earned a bye into the table of 128 where she defeated Jumi Wakita (JPN), 15-9.

O’Brien went on to fence four straight Russian opponents. After defeating Mariya Mekina, 15-6, in the table of 64, O’Brien upset Svetlana Sheveleva, the No. 3 fencer in the Cadet European Rankings, by a score of 15-14.

O’Brien defeated Maria Trofimova, 15-11, to advance to the quarters where she lost to Anastasia Kochetova (RUS), 15-9, and finished eighth overall.
