(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Team USA continued its success in the team events at the Goppingen Saber Cadet European Cup on Sunday when the women’s squad won silver in Germany.

Fencing with just three athletes after team member Lauren Kim (Plano, Texas) was unable to travel due to the storms in Texas, Riya Dave (Ardsley, N.Y.), Mary Barnett (Lake Oswego, N.Y.) and Gabrielle Tartakovsky (Livingston, N.J.) fenced every bout without the benefit of a substitution.

Seeded third in the tournament, Team USA drew a bye into the table of 16 where the ladies defeated Great Britain, 45-35.

Team USA advanced to the gold medal bout after a 45-43 win over France in the quarter-finals and Russia III, 45-41, in the semifinals.

The Americans fenced a close match against Russia II, but finished second after a 45-38 loss in the gold medal final.

In the men’s individual competition, 2013 Cadet World Team member Calvin Liang (Chandler, Ariz.) went undefeated in the pools and earned a bye into the table of 128 where he defeated teammate Jonah Buchwald (San Carlos, Calif.), 15-9.

Liang won his table of 64 bout against Francesco Maria Soprana (ITA), 15-7, and fenced his second U.S. teammate of the day, Connor Ritchey (Wheat Ridge, Colo.) Liang took the win, 15-12, and only gave up four touches to Hungarian Vendel Farkas in the table of 16.

Liang lost his next bout, however, to Dmitriy Sorokin (RUS), 15-10, and finished in sixth place.

Liang, who is in contention for a berth on his second Cadet World Team, moved up from No. 6 to No. 4 in the U.S. men’s saber cadet team rankings behind Karol Metryka (Linden, N.J.), Ben Natanzon (Manalapan, N.J.) and Gavin Turner (Rehoboth, Mass.)
