Jeff Spear Places 21st in Moscow, Team USA Finishes Sixth

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – London Olympian Jeff Spear (Wynantskill, N.Y.) claimed his third top-32 finish at a World Cup this season on Saturday at the Moscow Saber World Cup.

Spear went undefeated in pools on Friday and entered the table of 64 on Saturday as the 19th seed.

In his first direct elimination bout, Spear defeated 2013 Senior World team silver medalist Ciprian Galatanu (ROU), 15-13.

Spear lost his table of 32 bout to 2013 Senior World team bronze medalist Eunseok Oh (KOR), 15-13, and finished in 21st place.

Andrew Fischl (Huntington, N.Y.) advanced to his second international table of 64 this  season, but lost to Nicolas Rousset (FRA), 15-13, and finished in 52nd place.

On Sunday, Spear, Fischl, three-time Senior World Team member Ben Igoe (Staten Island, N.Y.) and 2014 Junior World Team member Gabriel Armijo (San Diego, Calif.) competed in the team event.

Seeded seventh, Team USA earned a bye into the table of 16 where the Americans defeated Poland, 45-40.

After a 45-26 loss to Korea in the quarter-finals, the 2012 Olympic Champions, Team USA upset Romania, the 2013 Senior World silver medalists, by a score of 45-44.

Team USA lost its final match of the day, 45-34, to Hungary and finished in sixth place.
