Ramirez moved to the United States at 21 years old after coming home one day to be told by his father that he had registered him for the Cuban lottery program as a three year old and he had been drawn to receive a visa from the United States. Ramirez, who learned to fence epee barefoot in Guantanamo Bay, had qualified for the Cuban National Team, but chose to come to the United States to pursue his dreams and represented Team USA for the first time at the Senior World Championships in 2015.
