Opening-Round Matchups and Bout Times Announced for U.S. Paralympic Fencing Team
by Nicole Kirk
PARIS, France - After a week of training and prepping for the games, the time has come. In a short 24 hours, the Grand Palais will open for Wheelchair Fencing for the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games.
The Grand Palais, home to 8,000-seats, located on the banks of the River Seine, is about a mile’s walk from the Eiffel Tower. The building, which opened in 1900 for the Paris Universal Exhibition, features a glass roof and nave created out of 6,000 tons of steel.
World Abilitysport held its draw to set the matchups for the entire week of fencing. The draw used seeding based on results over the past year and a half of fencing competitions sanctioned by World Abilitysport. That creates the initial lineup, and then a coin toss is used for athletes who are in close proximity of their seeding. Once that is complete, the bracket is set up, starting at the Round of 32 or Round of 16 depending on the event. At the 2024 Paralympic Games, the Round of 16 will get repechage.
