The two were chosen through a nationwide vote of USA Fencing referees.

Sean Shumate (left) and Bradley Baker were elected by their peers to join the Referees' Commission.

The referees have spoken and chosen two of their peers to join the Referees' Commission, the group responsible for developing, selecting and assessing USA Fencing referees.

Sean Shumate will serve as Vice Chair of the Domestic Assignments Committee, while Bradley Baker will serve as Vice Chair of the Rules and Examinations Committee.

Their terms begin Aug. 1, 2022.

A third position up for election, Vice Chair of the International Referee Development and Assignments Committee, went uncontested. Kelly Koehler will remain in this position.

Shumate has been a referee at the national and international level for more than 15 years. He has been a referee at three Paralympic Games (2012, 2016 and 2020) and has served on many committees within the Referees' Commision.

Baker has served as a referee for more than 20 years and has been editor of the USA Fencing Rulebook since 2017. He's a member of the Referees’ Commission Rules Committee and a Certified Referee Instructor.

This year's Referees' Commission election was open to USA Fencing members with voting rights who were 18 or older and in good standing as of Feb. 1, 2022. To be eligible, voters also needed to have worked at least one regional or national level event in the 2020/21 or 2021/22 season.

Of the 659 eligible voters, 215 opted to cast ballots — a turnout of 32.63%. Full election results are below.
