The field of 226 competitors was one of the largest of the tournament. But for Stewart Lee (Alliance Fencing Academy), the road to a national title in Y-14 men’s epee was won not by thinking about the 225 others he needed to beat but by focusing purely on his own game.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The field of 226 competitors was one of the largest of the tournament. But for Stewart Lee (Alliance Fencing Academy), the road to a national title in Y-14 men’s epee was won not by thinking about the 225 others he needed to beat but by focusing purely on his own game.

“If you want to fence well, don’t think about the tournament itself,” Lee says. “Think about the quality of your fencing — for example, your footwork, your bladework, your timing, your distance and all those other aspects. That's the best way to win.”

Those qualities helped Lee pick up one of the eight gold medals on the line on the seventh day of the 2022 USA Fencing National Championships and July Challenge, or Summer Nationals.

Lee looked strong throughout the finals bout — a fact that might not have surprised his coaches, who always instilled good vibes and positive feelings.

“The coaches were like, ‘Hey, you can do this. You can be good at fencing. You can make it very far,’” Lee says. “They said, ‘You just have to focus on your bout. Don't play around with your opponent. Don't get too aggressive. Don't freak out — control your emotion.’ And that's how you win.”

Other national championships were won by Adeline Senic (Renaissance Fencing Club) in Y-14 women’s foil, Nitika Subramanian (Manhattan Fencing Center) in Division II women’s saber, Charlotte Canning (Rhode Island Fencing Academy and Club) in Division II women’s epee, Jackson Kim (Metro Tacoma Fencing Club) in Division II men’s foil and Steven Hong (Sigma Fencing Academy) in Division III men’s saber.

In the first of the final two veteran team events of the tournament, Julie Seal’s Team took the top prize in women’s saber a day after earning gold in women’s foil. In the veteran men’s foil team event, Wildlife Fencingemerged with the victory.
