(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Seventeen-year-old Eli Dershwitz (Sherborn, Mass.) won his first junior international medal earlier this year at the Junior World Championships where he finished second at his debut Junior Worlds.

On Sunday, Dershwitz claimed his first Junior World Cup medal and continued to establish himself as one of the up-and-coming faces to watch in men’s saber as his bronze medal win at the Sosnowiec Junior Saber World Cup propelled him into a #5 ranking in the world – the top junior ranking for any U.S. fencer.

Dershwitz went undefeated in the pools and was seeded eighth in the direct elimination table.

After a bye into the table of 64, Dershwitz won his next two bouts against Jules-Emile De Visscher (BEL), 15-10, and Roman Sydorenko (UKR), 15-14.

In the table of 16, Dershwitz met U.S. teammate Christofer Ahn (Houston, Texas) who he defeated, 15-8.

Dershwitz’s 2012 Cadet World Championships teammate, Andrew Mackiewicz (Westwood, Mass.), advanced to the quarter-finals as well, but finished in seventh place after a 15-10 loss to Oleksiy Statsenko (UKR).

Statsenko defeated Dershwitz in the semifinals before going on to win gold.
