(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Isaac Buchwald (El Grenada, Calif.) and Alexander Ryjik (Alexandria, Va.) each earned his first top-eight finish at a Junior World Cup on Saturday.

Sixteen-year-old Buchwald and 18-year-old Ryjik finished in sixth and seventh place, respectively, on Saturday at the Dourdan Junior Men’s Saber World Cup in Dourdan, France.

Buchwald, who went 4-1 in the pools, was seeded 27th in the table of 128 while Ryjik was seeded 35th after a 4-2 pool finish.

Although Buchwald and Ryjik were two of eight U.S. athletes to advance to the table of 64, they were the only Americans to move on to the table of 32 where Buchwald defeated fourth seed Stefano Scepi (ITA), 15-11. Ryjik upset third seed Kamil Ibragimov (RUS), a fifth-place finisher at the 2010 Junior World Championships, by a score of 15-13.

In the table of 16, Buchwald outtouched Enrico Berre (ITA), 15-14, while Ryjik defeated Fabien Ballorca (FRA), 15-10.

Both fencers had close bouts in the quarter-finals and narrowly missed earning medals as Ryjik lost his bout to eventual silver medalist Robin Schroedter (GER), 15-13, and Buchwald fell to Alexander Trushakov (RUS), 15-13.
