For Immediate Release
11 Nov. 2010
At the 2010 World Fencing Championships today, the US Men’s Foil team lost their second match, in the round of 16, but in placement rounds, fenced with a vengeance and defeated several strong teams to finish in 9th place, an excellent finish for a very young team.
The US team of Miles Chamley-Watson (Philadelphia, Pa.), Kurt Getz (Rye, N.Y.) Alexander Massialas (San Fancisco, Calif.) and Gerek Meinhardt (San Francisco, Calif.) started off the day smoothly with a 45-23 defeat of Singapore.
In their next match, Meinhardt started off against Great Britain with a one-touch lead. The US men were outscored in five of their next six encounters, however, and never regained the lead again. The match was lost 45-36.
In placement rounds, the team was on fire. They defeated Hungary 45-30, Belarus 45-36, and Poland 45-43. That match was exciting, with the US men starting off the match trailing through three encounters and pulling just ahead through the seventh encounter. In the eighth, Chamley-Watson managed to hold Leszek Rajski at 35-35. Meinhardt closed the match with a 10-8 victory over Pawel Kawiecki. The US men therefore ended in 9th place.
In the Wheelchair Men’s Epee Team event, the US team of lost its first match of the day to Belarus, 45-14. In placement rounds, the men lost to Thailand 45-22 and then lost to Germany 39-36. The US did not field a team in the Wheelchair Women’s Epee event.
The 2010 World Fencing Championships is being held in concurrence with the World Wheelchair Fencing Championships in Paris, France, Nov. 4-13. Tomorrow, November 12, brings the Women’s Epee Team. Two sisters, Kelley and Courtney Hurley (San Antonio, Texas) will join teammates Lauren Willock (Astoria, N.Y.) and Lindsey Campbell (Brooklyn, N.Y.)on the US team.
