USA Fencers Set for World Championships

USA Fencing is proud to announce the team set to compete at the 2010 World Fencing Championships to be held in Paris, France, November 4 – 13.

This year’s team is rich in experience. Seven members are veterans of at least one Olympic Games, and three are Olympic medalists.

International superstar Mariel Zagunis (25, Beaverton, Ore.) goes into this Championships ranked number one in the world. The 2004 and 2008 Olympic gold medalist leads a team of deep women’s saber talent, including world #11-ranked Dagmara Wozniak (22, Avenel, N.J.), another 2008 Olympian and a member with Zagunis of the gold-medal 2010 Pan American Fencing Championships women’s saber team. The US team goes into the competition ranked second in the world, behind Russia.

The men’s saber team will be led by two Olympic veterans, Tim Morehouse (32, Bronx, N.Y.) and James Williams (25, Sacramento, Calif.). Morehouse, the 2010 National Champion, has a pair of top-eight finishes in World Cup competition this year, including sixth-place performances in both New York and Venezuela. The team is ranked sixth in the world.

Other top-ranked fencers on the team include Seth Kelsey (29, Brush Prairie, Wash.), 2004 and 2008 Olympian, and Miles Chamley-Watson (20, Philadelphia, Pa.). Kelsey is now ranked 12th in the world, and won a World Cup in Australia this season. Kelsey is a member of the US Air Force’s World Class Athlete program, and serves as a Captain currently in the Air Force Reserves.

Chamley-Watson (20, Philadelphia, Pa.) is a relative youngster in the top men’s foil ranks, but this season has earned the #7 spot in the world. Chamley-Watson has had a spectacular season, kicking off with a top-eight finish at a Grand Prix World Cup in Shanghai in April, a bronze at the Grand Prix in St. Petersburg, Russia in May, and a silver at a World Cup in Venezuela in June.

The World Championships are held by the Federation International d’Escrime (www.fie.ch), the international governing body of the sport.
