News flash! Friday’s Division I Women’s Foil event marked the return to elite competition for 2008 Olympic silver medalist Emily Cross (New York, N.Y.). Cross, who graduated from Harvard University in December, earned the bronze in the event.

Cross says she is aiming for both London in 2012 and for medical school in the fall of that year. She says she is training at the Fencers Club in New York with coaches Mikhail Petin and Seoung-Woo Lee.

“I only started training three weeks ago,” says Cross. “It was a kind of quick transition. I didn’t think I’d be ready but I needed to try for the points in order to be qualified to go to World Cups this season.”

Her goal is to qualify for a February World Cup in Budapest, Hungary.
