On the last day of the World Veteran Fencing Championships in Porec, Croatia, US fencer Jane Eyre (Medford, N.J.) won the gold in the 50-59 Women’s Saber event and teammate Marchel Miernik (Irvington, N.Y.) earned silver in the Men’s 70+ Foil.
Eyre sailed through the top eight, defeating two French athletes with relative ease -- Corinne Aubailly of France 10-3 in the quarterfinals and Patricia Reguigne 10-6 in the semis. In the final, Eyre beat Friederike Janshen of Germany 10-8.
US fencers accounted for four of the top eight. Heidi Runyan (San Diego, Calif.), Jeannine Bender (West New York, N.Y.) and Delia Turner (Philadelphia, Pa.) also reached the quarterfinals. Runyan fell to Janshen 10-8 in the top eight and Turner lost in the same round to Jane Hutchison of Great Britain 10-6. Bender lost her match to Reguigne 10-4.
Marcel Miernik reached the final in the Men’s 70+ Foil after a pair of close bouts. He defeated the number two seed, Franz Hirt of Germany, 10-9 in the top eight and then Hungary’s Jeno Kamuti 10-9 to reach the final. There, he lost to Gari Aftandilov of Russia 10-2.
This brings the total medal count to 11 for the US in one of the most competitive Veteran Championships ever. More than 600 athletes from 30 different nations attended the event. US athletes brought home two golds, five silvers and four bronzes. The US tied Germany for the highest number of medals won, although Russia led the end point total as that team earned four gold, two silver and two bronze medals.
