Absolute Fencing Gear® Signs on to Sponsor the Korfanty World Cup in Chicago, May 3-5

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – USA Fencing is pleased to announce that Absolute Fencing Gear® -- one of the world’s premier suppliers of fencing products and equipment – will be the title sponsor of the Korfanty World Cup in Chicago from May 3-5.

The Absolute Fencing Gear® Korfanty World Cup is the only Sabre World Cup that includes both men’s and women’s events and will be held at the University of Illinois at Chicago Flames Athletic Center / Physical Education Building, 839 W. Roosevelt Rd.

The only stop on the international World Cup circuit to be held in the United States, this premier event will feature approximately 300 elite sabre fencers, including Olympic and World Champion fencers from countries including the United States, Italy, Russia, China, Korea, Ukraine, Hungary and France.

“Absolute has supported USA Fencing and our athletes for a number of years, through their role as USA Fencing’s Official Tournament Equipment Provider as well as their support of the USA Fencing All-Academic Team and numerous individual elite athletes,” said USA Fencing CEO Val Belmonte (Colorado Springs, Colo.) “We’re proud to be able to create this partnership with a company within the fencing family that has excellent relationships within the international community and I’m looking forward to working with Gary and Amanda in the years to come.

Owned and operated by Gary Lu (Bridgewater, N.J.) and his mother, fencing coach Amanda Ronning (Bridgewater, N.J.), Absolute Fencing Gear® was founded by the family eight years ago and has provided equipment for major international events, including the 2011 World University Games, 2010 Asian Games and 2013 Vancouver Epee Grand Prix which was presented by Absolute Fencing Gear®.

In 2012, the Chicago Sabre World Cup was renamed the Korfanty World Cup in honor of Ed Korfanty (Portland, Ore.) Korfanty, the namesake of the tournament, was a former Polish National Team member and Veteran World Champion who led the U.S. Women’s Saber Team to six medals at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games. Korfanty, who was recently inducted into the FIE Hall of Fame, is the head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Saber Team and the personal coach to two-time Olympic and four-time Senior World Champion Mariel Zagunis (Beaverton, Ore.) The #2-ranked fencer in the world, Zagunis won a silver medal at this event in 2012 and will fence for another chance at gold in May.
