North American Cup Season Begins in Milwaukee This Weekend

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Nearly 2,000 of the top young fencers in the United States will compete at the first North American Cup of the season in Milwaukee this weekend.

Competition at the October NAC will begin on Friday and continue through Monday at the Wisconsin Center. All events are free and open to the public.

The first tournament of the eight-event NAC series will include cadet (U17), Y14, Division II and wheelchair events in all six weapons.

The October NAC will serve as the second domestic selection tournament for athletes seeking to qualify for the 2014 Cadet World Championships next spring.

Three past Cadet World Team members will be fencing in Milwaukee: two-time Cadet World Team member Morgan Partridge (Swansea, Mass. / foil) and 2013 Cadet World Team members Calvin Liang (Chandler Ariz. / saber) and Kasia Nixon (Los Angeles, Calif. / epee).

Other cadet fencers to watch in Milwaukee include four athletes who are each ranked in the top 10 in the world by the European Fencing Confederation:

  • Karol Metryka (Linden, N.J. / saber), 2013 Konin Cadet European Cup silver medalist
  • Ben Natanzon (Manalapan, N.J. / saber), 2013 Konin Cadet European Cup bronze medalist
  • Iman Blow (Brooklyn, N.Y. / foil), 2013 Budapest Cadet European Cup silver medalist
  • Nolen Scruggs (Ozone Park, N.Y. / foil), 2013 Budapest Cadet European Cup bronze medalist

The wheelchair competition will serve as the first qualifying tournament for the 2014 Pan American Championships and the entry lineup includes 2012 Paralympians Cat Bouwkamp (Fishers, Ind.) and Joey Brinson (Florence, Miss.)
