Daryl Homer Places 11th, Team USA Finishes 17th at Padua Saber World Cup

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – London Olympian Daryl Homer (Bronx, N.Y.) placed 11th at the Padua Saber World Cup in Italy on Saturday.

The 11th seed in the table of 64, Homer defeated Cristiano Imparato (ITA), 15-3, in his opening direct elimination bout and earned a 15-11 victory over three-time Senior World team medalist Vincent Anstett (FRA) in the table of 32.

Homer fenced 2012 Olympic Team Champion Bongil Gu (KOR) in the table of 16, but lost the bout, 15-12.

London Olympian Jeff Spear (Wynantskill, N.Y.) finished the pool rounds, 4-2, on Friday and defeated David Wei Ren Chan (SIN), 15-10, and Gilbert Schwarz (AUT), 15-13, in the preliminary tables.

On Saturday, Spear defeated Alberto Pellegrini (ITA), 15-8, but placed 30th after a 15-9 loss to five-time Senior World team medalist Fernando Cassares (ITA).  

Andrew Fischl (Huntington, N.Y.) split his pool bouts, 3-3, and advanced to the table of 64 for the first time in the new season after a 15-9 win over Sebastian Wiech (POL) and a 15-10 victory against Maxim Botezatu (RUS) in the preliminary tables.

Fischl lost his table of 64 bout to Gu, 15-4, and placed 61st overall.

Spear, Fischl, Ben Igoe (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Evangelos Efstathiou (Cambridge, Mass.) competed in the team event on Sunday.

The Americans trailed Austria, 40-31, after the first eight bouts of their table of 32 match. Spear outscored Matthias Willau, 9-5, but Austria took the win, 45-40, and Team USA finished 17th.
