U.S. Men’s Saber Team Places Sixth at Plovdiv Junior World Cup

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Fencing in the second team event of the men’s saber Junior World Cup season, Team USA placed sixth in Plovdiv, Bulgaria on Sunday.

The four-member squad included 2013 Cadet World Team members Eddie Chin (Livingston, N.J.) and Jonah Shainberg (Rye, N.J.) as well as Jonathan Fitzgerald (East Brunswick, N.J.) and Julian Merchant (New Rochelle, N.Y.)

The fourth-seeded Americans opened with a 45-30 win over Romania in the table of 16, but lost to Egypt, 45-43, in the quarter-finals.

After a 45-36 win over Poland, Team USA lost the fifth place match to Germany, 45-41.  

In the individual competition on Saturday, Andrew Doddo (South Orange, N.J.), Eli Dershwitz (Sherborn, Mass.) and Dawson Sieradzky (Wayne, N.J.) each advanced to the table of 32 where Doddo placed 18th; Dershwitz finished 23rd; and Sieradzky was 29th.
