USA Fencing President Don Anthony Jr.

Dear USA Fencing Members,

Thank you to those members who have taken the time to contact me in recent weeks regarding USA Fencing events in future seasons.

I know that there has been a great deal of speculation among our membership regarding whether there will be massive changes to our tournament structure next year.  We have heard your concerns and please know that USA Fencing encourages participation at national events for all of those who meet the qualification criteria.

Competing at the national level is an important step for many fencers and I, like many of you, still look back fondly at my first time fencing on the national stage. Please be aware that, while our Championship and July Challenge events are continuing to evolve, the qualification and eligibility requirements for North American Cups have remained the same as they were this season and full details regarding our 2015-16 national events will be published on June 8.

The Tournament Improvement Plan Working Group dedicated countless hours for nearly two years on improving our national events and I would like to thank all involved in this project, including:

  • Mary Griffith, Board of Directors member and former Tournament Committee Chair
  • Felicia Zimmermann, Board member and Club Owner
  • Jerry Benson, former Board member, Referee and Club Owner
  • Jennie Salmon, Youth Development Committee Member, Club Owner and Regional Tournament Organizer
  • Hossam Hassan, Club Owner and SYC organizer
  • Cody Mattern, Athlete Representative
  • Aaron Clements, former ROC Committee Chair and Referee
  • Sharon Everson, FOC member, Referee and Paralympic Development Task Force member
  • Greg Massialas, National Coach and Club Owner
  • Buckie Leach, National Coach and Club Coach
  • Kris Ekeren, USA Fencing Executive Director
  • Seth Kelsey, former USA Fencing Sports Performance Director
  • Kate Reisinger, USA Fencing Sports Performance Director
  • Tanya Brown, former USA Fencing National Events Manager
  • Christine Strong-Simmons, USA Fencing Director of Operations
  • Lee Metcalf, Facilitator

The TIP Working Group was truly a collaborative effort across a broad spectrum of our constituents and included club owners, tournament organizers, athletes, board members, National Office staff and others as we worked to make sure a wide array of voices were included in planning and implementation of this program.

As we look ahead to the new season and beyond, as an organization we look forward to getting continuous feedback from our membership as well as analyzing quantitative and qualitative data on how best to improve the tournament experience for our membership and grow the sport of fencing for generations to come.

Sincerely,

Donald K. Anthony Jr.
USA Fencing President / Chairman of the Board
