(Stanford, Calif.) – Stanford fencer Alexander Massialas was named one of three Block “S” Outstanding Male Freshman Award recipients, announced Thursday by the Stanford Athletic Board.

Massialas shared the award – given annually to freshmen who excel in their sport and provide standout performances – with Kevin Hogan (football) and Bret Bonanni (water polo).

Massialas completed an impressive freshman season, earning first team All-America honors after compiling a team-best 50-8 record and claiming the NCAA men’s foil title. He is Stanford’s first men’s foil champion since 2000 and helped lead the Cardinal to an eighth-place NCAA finish – the team’s best result since 2008.

Less than a month after finishing first at the NCAA Championships, Massialas claimed the men’s foil Junior World Championships title in Porec, Croatia.

He will compete at the Pan American Zonal Championships June 16-21 in Cartagena, Colombia, and at the Senior World Championships August 5-12 in Budapest, Hungary.
