March North American Cup Day 1 Results

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Six individual and three team gold medals were awarded on Friday when competition began at the March North American Cup at the Memphis Cook Convention Center in Tennessee.

Corbin Wilson (Richmond, Texas) won his first NAC title when he defeated Anton Chmut (Brooklyn, N.Y.), 15-13, in gold medal final of the Division III men’s epee competition.

Signe Golash (Syracuse, N.Y.) also became a first-time NAC gold medalist. Golash defeated Lindsay Sapienza (Bardonia, N.Y.), 15-11, in the final bout of the Division III women’s saber event. The 14-year-old will fence again on Saturday in the Y14 women’s saber event.

Jared Dans (Merrick, N.Y.) earned his best finish at a national tournament last month with a seventh-place result in the cadet men’s foil event at the Junior Olympic Fencing Championships in Portland. Dans won gold for the first time at a NAC on Friday with a 15-13 final bout victory over Nick Itkin (Los Angeles, Calif.)

Competing in her first full season as an epee fencer after switching from foil last year, Ariana Mangano (Colts Neck, N.J.) came into the March NAC with three SYC titles in epee to her credit. Seeded third in the Y12 epee competition at the start of the tournament, Mangano won her first NAC gold after a 15-12 win over Allegra Parker (Austin, Texas) in the final bout.

Lauren Scruggs (Ozone Park, N.Y.) entered the Y10 women’s foil competition as both the event’s top seed and the only fencer in the field with a C rating. A gold medalist in this event at the July NAC, Scruggs didn’t give up more than four touches to any of her opponents and won her second title of the season with a 9-4 victory over Lauren Kim (River Vale, N.J.) Scruggs will return to the strip on Saturday for a second chance at gold when she fences up in the Y12 women’s foil competition.

The youngest individual gold medalist of the day was 10-year-old RJ Anglade Jr. (Alpharetta, Ga.) who defeated William Owens (East Setauket, N.Y.), 10-6, in the gold medal final of the Y10 men’s saber event.

For the first time, youth team competitions were also included at the NAC.

In the Y10 women’s team saber event, West of the Mississippi Superstars won the first gold medal of the tournament when Natalie Cashman (Prairie Village, Kans.), Francesca Fox-Gitomer (Portland, Ore.), Sabrina McFarland (Littleton, Colo.) and Amanda Vasconcellos (Beaverton, Ore.) earned a 45-31 win over The Athenians squad of Celine Owens (East Setaucket, N.Y.), Angelina Salmon (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) and Hava Stone (New York, N.Y.)

Los Angeles International Fencing Center took the Y14 women’s team foil title with a gold medal win over Dazzling Panda Stars. The Dazzling Panda Stars held a 28-24 lead over LAIFC after the first six bouts, but Alyssa Chen (San Diego, Calif.) outscored Zoe Barnette (Bethesda, Texas), 10-2, to give LAIFC a 34-30 lead in . Alexandra Park (Tarzana, Calif.) split the seventh bout with Sophia Mandour (Perry Halld, Md.) to hold LAIFC’s four-touch lead as Xiao-Qing Tsai (Salt Lake City, Utah) took the strip as anchor against the Dazzling Panda Stars’ Karina Wang (Lutherville Timonium, Md.) Tsai and Wang each scored five touches and LAIFC won the match, 45-41.

Nellya #1 dominated the Y14 men’s team saber competition as Christian Fernandes (Atlanta, Ga.), Kamar Skeete (Duluth, Ga.), Andrew Sun (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Christopher Walker (Atlanta, Ga.) didn’t give up more than 20 points to any of their three opponents on Friday. After 45-17 wins over OFA and Nellya2, Nellya #1 defeated MFC Samourais, 45-20, in the gold medal final. Seeded second at the start of the tournament, the MFC Samourais team of Matthew Gets (Morganville, N.J.), Ben Stone (New York, N.Y.), Vance Wood (New York, N.Y.) and Jason Oh (Englewood Cliffs, N.J.) finished the day with a silver medal.
